Hubs
(0 products)In BMX racing, hubs are the heart of the wheelset and a primary factor in how fast a bike accelerates and maintains speed. Located at the center of the wheels, they house the bearings that allow the wheels to spin and the engagement mechanism that transfers power from the pedals to the rear tire.
Because racing is defined by the "snap" out of the starting gate, the technology inside a BMX hub is highly specialised:
• Instant Engagement: This is the most sought-after feature in a racing rear hub. High-end hubs use a system of pawls or sprag clutches to ensure that as soon as you apply pressure to the pedals, the wheel moves forward with zero "dead spot."
• Sealed Bearings: Unlike standard loose-ball bearings, race hubs almost exclusively use precision sealed cartridge bearings. These offer much lower rolling resistance and are protected from the dust and grit found on outdoor tracks.
• Axle Materials: To balance strength and weight, hubs feature different axle types. Pro-level hubs often use hollow chromoly or titanium bolts for maximum stiffness, while smaller riders may use lighter aluminum axles.
• Cassette vs. Freewheel: Most modern race bikes utilize cassette hubs, which allow riders to easily swap out individual rear cogs to change their "gearing" based on the length and steepness of a specific track.
A high-quality hub set not only reduces drag but also provides the reliability needed to handle the immense torque of a pro-level sprint without slipping.
